THE STORY

The Synopsis
THE CHILDREN is a musical based on the 1980 b-horror movie of the same title. The social satire elements of the film (irresponsible parents, latch-key kids, fears of power plants in suburbia) along with the techniques and traps that befall low-budget theatrical ventures - are all parodied here.

The Production History
With music by Hal Goldberg, and book and lyrics by Stan Richardson, THE CHILDREN was written in two weeks, rehearsed in two and performed for the first time in the Spring of 1998 at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Festival of the Arts, where it received top honors.  It was then revised, workshopped and had it's Off-Off-Broadway debut in the Performance Club of the Obie-Award winning HERE Arts Center in the Fall of 1999, followed by another run at the Dorothy B. Williams Theater at HERE in the Spring of 2000. The white-hot popularity of the show in both of these incarnations led to the creation of THE CHILDREN: The Original Pre-Off-Broadway Cast Recording, released on compact disc in December of 2000.
